This is a great example of Donna Karan's earlier work. It is also an extremely chic and wearable cocktail dress for today as well. It is made of a stretch knit jersey that has a bit of weight to it that allowed Donna to drape and place the fabric exactly where she wished and be able to hold that created shape. The cut is fantastic with a sculptural feel to it. It has in inner stretch bandage dress that is fitted to the body but kept so that the exterior fabric that lies over that just skims over the waist area. Once in it feels like a corseted piece. A panel of fabric drapes around and over that inner dress and is attached up at the side bust. A flared and shaped felted fabric rises above the neckline to the side for a avant garde finish. The straps are wide elastic bands that attache into the middle back - a silhouette that was a play on the sportswear movement of the time. The tag indicates it was a sample piece with the pattern number indicated and that is was Look #22, so was most likely used in the fashion show for that season too. Excellent condition.
It has a fully stretch silk and boned inner corset that runs to just past the hip. It closes with a back, hand set zipper. Mostly hand finished being a sample dress this is expected. The straps are sewn in by hand and there are some loose areas. you get the feeling that it was added by hand after the sample arrived to her studio. It is left as found. The inner dress does have some stretch and is meant to be fitted
